A smart mirror is a two-way mirror with an electronic display behind the glass. The display can show the viewer different kinds of information in the form of widgets, such as weather and time, and date, and similarly news updates. The technology is driven by a Raspberry Pi or Windows PC, combined with voice recognition and touch technology. I designed one and then built my own prototype and delved  into the world of making do-it-yourself “SMART MIRROR

One of the most searched terms on the website is “touch”, so the fact that people really want to have their smart mirrors also touch-enabled.

But is that even possible?

In other words-Yes, you really can -But this will cost you a little.

How To Make a Touch-Enabled “Smart Mirror” In-Home:

The future smart mirror does not just say that you are the prettiest of all of them. It will also tell you the time, date and outside weather also upcoming calendar appointment and more. In fact, you can make this national smart mirror.

Starting a Smart Mirror from scratch will cost you around $ 300, but you can easily reduce the costs and bring it down to $ 100. Especially if you use a low-cost, hacker-friendly Raspberry Pi.

The Raspberry Pi is a low cost, credit-card sized computer that plugs into a computer monitor or TV, and uses a standard keyboard and mouse. It is a capable little device that enables people of all ages to explore computing and to learn how to program in languages like Scratch and Python.

How To Make a Touch-Enabled “Smart Mirror” In-Home:

When it comes to making your normal mirror into a smart touch-enabled mirror, there are many options to choose.
In them, some are a little expensive compared to another regular non-touchable mirror.
Here is a quick list of some option you that can try/do:

1. Using an IR Touch overlay frame
    COST AROUND- $400+

You can also add touch capabilities to your mirror using the IR Touch Overlay frame, a frame that you have mounted on your mirror glass. It is the cheapest of all. You can save time and frustration by choosing the correct display for your touch overlay. You’ll need a non-touch display with a flat bezel. The bezel should be black, not silver or white. Avoid curved screens, as the overlay won’t be able to lay flat on them. Televisions with too small a bezel (under 0.5″) may pose a problem when laying the overlay on them, as there is nothing to set it on.

2.Using a touch foil intended for commercial use           COST AROUND- $600+

If you want to go completely overboard, you can buy a specially made plastic foil that goes to the top of your frame, which will cost you around $ 1000 +

The Touch Foil has an electronic static liner that is layered on an electrical level, making it perfect for both permanent and temporary applications.

The Interactive Projection Foils are designed for rear projection applications onto glass and come as a kit which can be simply installed within a matter of minutes. Each Interactive Touch Foil comes with one of four types of projection material laminated to the surface:

  • Sunscreen – sun readable screen for applications in direct sunlight.
  • Pro Diffusion – high quality, high contrast screen for general display/window applications.
  • High Gain – excellent value, high gain screen for general display/window applications.
  • Clearview – transparent / holographic screen for general display / window applications.

3. Using a resistive touch screen
    COST AROUND- $350+

It is the cheapest of all. You can save time and frustration by choosing the correct display for your touch overlay. You’ll need a non-touch display with a flat bezel.     USB and serial interfaces for contacting all resistive touch screen technologies with an operating system.
  • Overlay Film
    To increase the mechanical stability and the realization of dirt-free touch panels, resistive touch screens are laminated over the entire surface with a customer-specific overlay film.

Sensor
Resistive touch screens are available in different designs:
1) 4-wire technology is the most commonly used technology
2) 5-wire technology
3) 8-wire technology
4) Matrix/digital technology
